Position Summary

Stewardship Technician 2023 (seasonal, part-time)

OPPORTUNITY: 

Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, a St. Louis-based nonprofit organization, is seeking a Seasonal Stewardship Technician. The successful candidate will work with the Forestry Manager to facilitate planting projects and steward trees throughout the region in support of Forest ReLeaf’s mission of planting trees and enriching communities. 

SCHEDULING:

The Stewardship Technician season runs from March – November. This is a part-time role.
– March – May – 24 hours/week, 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day to accommodate planting and potting events
– June – September – 32 hours/week, Monday through Friday to accommodate Summer intern schedules
– October – November – 24/hours/week, 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day to accommodate planting and potting events

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: 

The Stewardship Technician reports to the Forestry Manager. They will supervise summer interns. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Tree Stewardship

  • Maintain select new plantings for successful establishment, including watering, weeding, mulching and pruning. 
  • Participate in annual re-inventory data collection process to assess tree health for Forest ReLeaf’s newly planted trees and those selected from Project CommuniTree plantings
  • Support volunteer engagement and activities at the nursery and in the field.  Including but not limited to watering, tree plantings,  mulching projects, and special events

Manage Summer Stewardship Interns

  • Oversee day to day, in the field operations, of summer interns in stewarding newly planted Forest ReLeaf trees
  • Assist in the training of summer crew members in safety protocols, best management practices, tree identification and use of trucks/equipment. 

CommuniTree Nursery and Arboretum

  • Support in the management and maintenance of the arboretum and perennial pollinator and rain gardens
  • Work alongside Nursery Volunteers for potting days and general nursery maintenance.  

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience: Some knowledge of tree identification, planting and care.  Strong leadership, communication, flexibility and human relations skills are critical for this position. Must be able to function well as a team player with staff, volunteers and partner organizations. Nursery work requires occasional heavy lifting and physical exertion. A valid driver’s license is required; use of a personal vehicle for agency-related travel will receive mileage reimbursement. Working hours, especially during the spring and fall seasons, will require regular weekend and evening commitments. 

COMPENSATION: 

The pay range is $16-$18/hr depending on qualifications

Canopy Crew Intern 2023 (seasonal, part-time)

OPPORTUNITY:

Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, a St. Louis-based nonprofit organization, is seeking interns for the summer of 2023. The Canopy Crew Internship will provide a diverse learning environment with lots of hands-on experience and exposure to industry professionals. Crew members will serve the organization’s mission of planting trees and enriching communities by performing tree stewardship activities and tree health assessments on a rotational basis.  

SCHEDULING:

Hours: Part-time, 30-hour/week position Monday – Friday 
Preferred dates: May 30th – August 18th

LOCATIONS:

  • Forest ReLeaf Office – 4168 Juniata St.
  • CommuniTree Gardens & Nursery – 2194 Creve Coeur Mill Rd
  • Variable locations in the field

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Candidates will be expected to work with other crew members to steward (water, weed, mulch) previously planted trees across St. Louis City and surrounding areas.
  • Participate in our tree inventory using the ArcGIS Collector App to record data on the survival rates of our planting projects. 
  • Assist with developing and delivering Forest ReLeaf’s various outreach activities including Summer Tree Camp, community volunteer work days, and nursery events.
  • Be walking neighborhoods to collect tree health data
  • Additional responsibilities include working at Forest ReLeaf’s tree nursery located adjacent to St. Louis County’s Creve Coeur Park. The candidate will work directly with our foresters and volunteers in all phases of containerized nursery production (weed and pest control, irrigation maintenance, planting, pruning, mulching, etc). 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Provide for personal transportation to and from the office and the nursery locations.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of conditions, including heat and inclement weather.
  • Work occasional weekend depending on the project schedule.
  • Coordinate his/her own college credit details, if applicable.
  • Use of personal smartphone for inventory projects and tree health assessments using the Collector app and Health Trees Healthy Cities app.

COMPENSATION:

This position pays $14/hour.
